Crit Ecologies: Artists, Community, Criticality
Crit Ecologies: Artists, Community, Criticality
Curated by Dr. Livia Strauss, executive Director, HV MOCA and Patricia Miranda, founder, The Crit lab
Artists for the exhibition Crit Ecologies have been participants in The Crit Lab, a graduate-level critique seminar program for working artists after and outside academia. The Lab is an alternate critical community for artists to come together in ongoing, sustained, contact, with empathetic listening, radical optimism and rigorous dialogue, in an act of hope over destruction. The structured pedagogy was developed by Miranda to focus and deepen discussion beyond common subjective reactions, and to support ethical structures in which artists’ practices can thrive. The Crit Lab structure was designed in response to the opinionated and personal nature of much critique, often clouded by the unremarked power dynamics of gender, class, race, AGE.
Curated in a competitive juried process from Crit Lab participants from Fall 2023-Spring 2024, selected artists have the benefit of exposure through an exhibition at Hudson Valley MOCA, an institution whose reputation is partially based on a successful record in identifying extraordinary talent early in an artist’s career.

When the art world as you knew it went one way, we went the other. Where elitism is the norm, we dared to deviate. Art isn’t confined to convention or rule, and how you enjoy it shouldn’t be either.
We’ve created something different, and we want you to experience it. We combine affordable and original artworks and 140 independent artists with immersive installations, performances, DJs – and a fully stocked bar.
Here, art is for everyone.

Mama Needs a Raise
Mama Needs a Raise!
Towards a “Utopian” Care Economy
The Old Stone House & Washington Park (OSH) partners with the Mother Creatrix Collective for Mama Needs a Raise!, a group exhibition that addresses the needs and wants of caregivers. The exhibition builds upon Mother Creatrix's previous exhibitions on the experiences of artist mothers and OSH's ongoing Brooklyn Utopias series, which invites artists to envision ideal communities. Mama Needs a Raise! asks artists to consider what they need and want, what would comprise a "Utopian" society that better recognizes and supports both caregiving and art-making, and what role artists can play in creating a more "perfect" society for all working parents.
Curated by Katherine Gressel and the Mother Creatrix Collective

ABOUT THE OLD STONE HOUSE & WASHINGTON PARK:
The Old Stone House (OSH) is a reconstructed Dutch colonial farmhouse located in Park Slope’s Washington Park/J.J. Byrne Playground. The playground and house restoration were first developed by Robert Moses in the 1930s, but the land surrounding the house made history long before then as the site of the 1776 Revolutionary War Battle of Brooklyn, and as a 19th Century Brooklyn Dodgers practice field.
OSH is at the crossroads of ancient Lenape roads, adjacent to the historic town of Marechkawick, and we acknowledge this land’s original inhabitants.
Today, OSH hosts history and environmental education programs as well as cultural and family events, with its surrounding J.J. Byrne Playground attracting thousands of children daily and its education programs serving myriad local school and after-school groups. Visit www.theoldstonehouse.org to learn more.
