Inside a Residency: Meet My Muse

A view of Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Westchester County, NY

Ward Pound Ridge Reservation (WPR) is Westchester Counties' largest park with 4,315 acres of different terrains and landscapes.  It’s filled with miles of trails, beautiful landscapes, and areas for picnicking and camping.  It is also home to a nature museum and two galleries.

I first learned about WPR when I taught at Pound Ridge Elementary School, but I am ashamed to admit I never visited!  Luckily I have rectified that and am visiting WPR regularly as part of my residency at Yellow Studio.

About twice a week, I will hike on one of the trails, bringing my camera, sketchbook, and some tissue paper (if I remember!).  Walking, I look around, sometimes taking moments to be still and observe.  I’ll collect small items that catch my attention, like a piece of bark or rock, photograph a rock popping out of the grass, or the roots of a tree winding through a path.  Then I head back to the studio to make art!

As I explore, I mark where I have been on a map, and I hope to travel as many trails as possible before I finish my residency in July!

I very much enjoy my time at WPR.  Driving into the entrance always puts a smile on my face.  I’m excited to share this park with you, as well as the art I am making (but that will come later).

If you haven’t explored this park yet, it’s time to get out there!
