A Bit About the Art

A Brooklyn, NY sidewalk crack

As an artist, observation has always been important to me. Observing, noticing, and reflecting are the fundamental elements of my practice. They are the inspiration for each composition. I am particularly drawn to the unexpected lines that I find in my surroundings. These lines inspire my collages and mixed-media landscapes.

A mountain's contour, the colors of a sunset, or the texture of rock will inspire me to take a photo, sketch, or rub it directly on paper. My studies serve as visual references as I create larger compositions using found papers, handmade papers, and older artwork.

Each series begins with a limited color palette that unifies the shapes, textures, and lines. As I select and prepare my papers, I begin to tear or cut shapes and arrange them,  working on several different compositions at once. I sense and feel my way through the piece, placing paper intuitively until I find a sense of balance within each piece. When I set and rearrange papers, my process becomes more intuitive and responsive to the play of textures, colors, and edges within a particular landscape.

The final compositions float, calling attention to space and inviting viewers to consider whether or not they are real or imagined landscapes, internal or external spaces. Subtle variations in edges, textures, and layers of paper draw the viewer into each piece. I want viewers to discover moments of thoughtful observation as they make their way through the landscapes.
